Terrible Performance When Editing Transcripts

I've just managed to survive over 12 hours of using the auto-transcribe feature with Premiere v23.2.

What an ordeal.

Thousands of transcribing mistakes across 49 minutes of footage, but that could be forgiven if it wasn't such a painful experience correcting the transcript.

The main issue I had was freezing of the transcribe panel after making an edit, then waiting anywhere from 2-20 seconds for it to come back to life so I could make another change. In isolation not a huge issue but multiplied over a 49 minute project this has wasted hours.

Even more annoying sometimes when it stopped hanging, the changes I literally just made reverted back to what they were originally. This made the whole process of editing the transcript so time consuming and tedious, I don't think I'll ever use it again.

My system is all brand new:

Core i9 13900k

RTX 4090 24GB

64GB DDR5 5600 RAM

3 X PRO M2 NVME DRIVES (7500MB+ READ SPEEDS).

The project itself was uber simple. A pre-rendered MP4 file in 1080p where literally the only job was to transcribe it so there was no use of effects and only one audio and video track. The timeline played back fine, the only hanging was in the transcribe panel. The main menus and playback could still function even whilst the transcribe panel was locked up.

My mate was also working on another video from the same project at the same time. He experienced the exact same issues and he is using a brand new maxed-out M2 MacBook Pro.

So Adobe, this really needs fixing if even high end systems don't work properly with it.

Hi. I can confirm it's not a beta version. I can also supply the video used but it's just a bog standard h264 1080p render, nothing fancy, encoded in Media Encoder.

If it also helps, performance seemed to deteriorate the further into the project I got (even reboots didn't help but performance monitor suggests my system wasn't even breaking a sweat). It looks like when it's lagging, maybe it's doing some thinking of trying to make sense of the changes I just made. I don't know, it's just a guess.

Ironically if I create captions from the transcript, they are way faster to edit but that wasn't what I needed for this job. Plus I'm not sure how you would make bulk changes to styles once you've created captions. So that wasn't an option.

On another note, even without the last, having to keep double clicking on the transcript for every little change also ate into the time. Every time I resume playback (which was every few seconds) I'd have to reselect the transcript. It would be much better if it stayed open in a live, editable way without impairing playback (or vice-versa).

And one final thing, the spell-checker doesn't seem to operate in a terribly efficient way. It'll highlight what it thinks are misspellings, but doesn't give any option to correct (e.g. by right mouse button to see options). Well, that's not entirely true, I think I saw it once but oddly I could never get it to reappear in the transcribe panel. Very odd. Maybe I'm misremembering but what I do remember it just didn't work.

Hi @fiendishmedia. This sounds frustrating and should not be happening.  I just want to confirm that you are using the regular shipping version of Premiere Pro v23.2, not the beta, correct?  If you are using the beta, that is a very old version, and I recommend you update it.  Have you heard about our text-based editing workflow that is in beta? https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-discussions/now-in-beta-introducing-text-based-editing-in-premiere-pro/m-p/13552305 I want to confirm that you are not using this workflow in beta.  Either way, you should not be experiencing this kind of lag.  If you are willing to share media with me, I can try on my end and let you know if there is anything weird with your media or if you indeed found a bug.
