I finally figured out the problem.  The video channel and audio tracks (V1/A1) need to be highlighted for the delete to work.

When I've used the text-based editing, Premiere normally highlights the clip. I'm not seeing your clip get highlighted. I do the playhead move.

 

Maybe try it without the other audio clip in the sequence. 

 

If that doesn't work, try restarting Premiere.

 

You might also check your Creative Cloud Desktop app to make sure that you're using the most recent update.

Thanks for the reply.  I'll try it again today and see what happens.  I'm using the most recent version of premiere 24.1
