Text to timeline editing: highlighting text is fussy

Using this feature for the first time, love it. But find that it’s really easy to accidentally clear the text you’ve selected, especially when doing longer blocks than the screen displays. You soft of have to stay parked on a word. If you veer slightly beyond the end of a word it will clear the whole selection. And sometimes I find I can’t highlight any text unless I do it backwards, from the out back to the in. Anyone else seeing this? v26.3 OS26.2

Are you using mouse or keyboard shortcuts to do your selection? I assume you have the “Automatically set in/out points” toggled on. If shift is not held down, any single click or keyboard entry will clear the previous in/out and start over.

If you are using a mouse, and you click/drag, you won’t see the result until you release the click. If you are doing Shift/keystroke, you’ll see the change after each keystroke.

I assume you are in the transcript tab, and that you are in the selection/navigation mode, and not in the mode to edit the text in an entry.

Using the keyboard to select would likely be more precise, but it would also slow me down… I think I use shift help down but will pay more attn. Will try to do a screen capture the next time it happens.

When I hold Shift down while selecting the text in the Text panel, the UI experience definitely changes for me! The highlighted selection isn’t following my cursor and sometimes words aren’t being selected even after I drag over them (while holding Shift.)

When I’m not holding Shift, the UI behaves more like how I’d expect. It’s more fluid and precise.

A screen recording could definitely help us dig deeper into this.

Hey there, glad you’re enjoying the text-based editing workflow! I’m on a Mac and I’m not having the same issues with selection that you’re describing, so let’s take a closer look.

Are you using the Text-Based Editing workspace? Try using the toolbar at the top to go to Window>Workspaces>Text-Based Editing to see if that helps the UI.

Do you use a trackpad or do you have a mouse?

It looks like there might be an update available for your OS, maybe that would help. I say that because updating the OS on a Mac updates the graphics driver.

Do you have any other finicky UI behavior when you’re using Premiere? Or is it only during text-based editing?

Yes I’m using the Text-Based editing workspace. I use a trackball which gives me great precision. Don’t see this behavior elsewhere in Premiere. On Mac OS 26.2 which isn’t the very latest but still pretty recent.
