"The project contained a sequence that could not be opened..."

"...no sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."

I updated recently to Premiere CC 2015.3. This morning, opening a project which I'd been working on all yesterday in Premiere, I got the above error. I can't open this project in earlier versions of AP, natch.

I created a new blank project (no. 2), tried to import the entire problem project into it, and got the same error. I then tried to import only the latest sequence into this new project; which worked fine.

However, when I save project no. 2 (with its one sequence), and try to reload it, I get the same error as above. The only solution is to create another blank project (no. 3), import the (single) sequence from project no.2 into it, and then I can work with this. Which is odd, because importing the whole of project 2 doesn't work; only the single sequence it contains - which comes to basically the same thing.

I also can't export via AME (to H.264; I haven't so far tried any other codecs). I have to export directly from Premiere.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere, with exactly the same results. I also get exactly the same problem on two other machines here.

Machine specifications:

#1: Windows 10 laptop, Adobe CC2013.3, 32GB RAM, twin SSDs, nVidia Quadro 5010M

#2: Windows 10 desktop, Adobe CC2015.3, 32GB RAM, SSD boot / spinning swap drive, nVidia GeForce GTX 770

#3: Windows 10 desktop, Adobe CC2015.3, 64GB RAM, SSD boot / spinning swap drive, nVidia Quadro K5000

Hi,

We apologize for the inconvenience. There are some issues related to the Activation of Premiere Pro which is giving error " The project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type”.

The team is aware of this issue and it will be fixed ASAP.

Please sign out and sign in from your CC application to turn the application in the trial mode so that projects can be opened.

I came up against this problem opening a project from 2022. So it's still an issue.

Anyway there is a quick solution that doesn't involve deleted preferences of uninstalling Premiere.

I was able to navigate the project through the media browser in Premiere and import the sequence I needed into a new project.

I have also seen elsewhere that importing the project directly in the Project pane or dragging and dropping the project file and then selecting 'Import selected sequences" (as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deF_rIam_tE) has the same effect though I haven't tried that method.

Still having this problem in January 2020 with latest version of PP CC on Mac - so much for 'ASAP' Adobe!

Hi Vinay,

Nothing on that document works for me. A lot of the options don't exist in my Premiere (I.e. I have no deactivation button)

Is there anything else that may be causing this issue? Something to do with the original install, maybe?

Thank you

Hi,

Are you checking the Sign out option in CC application>Prefernces as shown in the screenshot?

Hi, I am receiving this message on all my projects after closing them the first time "This project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence previe preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type". I do not have a 'deactivate' button in my Help menu and signing off and on makes no difference. I have cleared the cache with Alt + shift and that also makes no difference. Please can you tell me how I can rectify this issue as at the moment I cannot open any old projects unless I import sequences into a new Premiere project.
Thanks

Has this been resolved yet? It looks like the Adobe rep said a fix would be out "ASAP" almost a month ago. Any word? Got the error today.  >:(

This is Adobe from the bad old days...Unbelievable...Hope someone at Adobe googles the term "regression testing."

After the application of Windows patch KB3167685 for a issue with Adobe Flash, I began to have issues with Premier Pro 5.5 "Sequence could not be opened".

The shaky work around that I used to get into the project.

Run PP as administrator

Delete the Adobe Premier Pro Pref   - file

Open a New empty Project; close project and open an existing project.

This works for a while; then you have to cycle through the process again.

Quicktime is also having problems..

There is an error with loading the C++ runtime files

-------------------

I have moved on from this issue.

I did an inplace install and that fixed all the issues.

The patch application corrupted the system; the patch was again applied after the in-place installation and it worked without any issues.

Thx

Hi Vinay,

Yes, that works (uninstalling Premiere, deleting those three folders, signing out and then in again). I get this message on opening a project:

********************************

\\?\Z:\DOCS\Premiere_Pro_CC2015\Generate - Indigo Car Park_CC2015.3.prproj

Audio Filter missing:  3:5653545a 6e4d434d 756c7469 62616e64

Audio Filter missing:  3:5653545a 6e564556 6f63616c 20456e68

Video Filter missing:  AE.MB LookSuite3

********************************

I know about Magic Bullet Looks, but I haven't used any non-standard audio plugins. I'll see if I can work out what these are, unless you can tell from that info?

Thanks

Hi Nick,

Check the audio part and the effects applied to any in effects control or try to copy and paste the old sequence into new one and check if issue persists.

You can also try deleting Media cache and Media Cache files in below default location:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common

I found a solution for me. I'm not sure it will work for everyone. I signed out, cleared the SLCache (as suggested by Vinay above), and signed back in. Now the projects are opening.

I also followed Vinay's instructions above and it worked for me as well.

We are experiencing this issue on 3 machines. Some updated to 2015.3 others did not update.
