Timeline becomes unresponsive with more than 3 items in project

When I have more than 3 items of any kind in my project (including sequences), the timeline freezes up, but only visually.  I can click clips and see the "effect controls" window respond, and I can scrub around and see the program monitor respond, but the timeline and playhead will not update visually until I hit the spacebar to start playback.  It gets worse if I try to edit. After a few edits -- sometimes more, sometimes less -- the timeline will stop being interactable even non-visually, and I can no longer make edits.  Saving temporarily allows me to make a few edits again, but this is a very frustrating way to work.  Removing project files until I am back down to only 3 files returns the timeline to normal functionality.  Any ideas?  Bear in mind, while I am fairly good at my own simpler workflow, I am surely a novice and will probably require deeper explanation.

Well, I have good news and bad.  The good news is for some reason, new projects all of the sudden started to behave normally, with as many items as I like.  I have absolutely no idea why or how, I haven't changed anything about my computer since the last time I checked, and I didn't change my process for creating a new project, left everything default.  I just checked while writing, and all previously broken projects have been fixed as well.  I'm glad that after months of this issue, it's finally working again.  But the bad news is that without knowing how it got fixed, or why it broke in the first place, I can't fix it in the future should it happen again.

Perhaps it was something about opening the old, working project from back in October that I mentioned, that uncorrupted something or other.

Oh well, I'm glad it's working, thanks for helping me out, both of you.

Hey, I've had something clear up like this also. And ... like you ... I do not feel comfortable when I don't know why it went buggy, or why ... it stopped.

Could be an interaction with something you can't even find. There have been some truly bizarre interactions between dll files from other apps, and Pr, for instance.

First thing on a question like this is to include the specs on both your computer and the media you're working.

OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM, and your drives in use.

And also, what is the frame-rate and frame-size of your media, what created it, and what format/codec is it?

Downloading/installing MediaInfo is very useful. Drag/drop a file onto the icon on your desktop for that applet, then going to the Tree view mode, get a screengrab of the video tab and drag/drop that into your reply box here.

    OS: Windows 10
    CPU: Ryzen 1700
GPU: Nvidia EVGA GTX 980 with 4GB of vRAM

    RAM: 16GB DDR4

SSD: 250GB (this is where Premiere Pro's program lives)
Hard Drive: 2TB at 7200RPM speed (this is where the video files I work with live)

The video files I work with are created from Nvidia Shadowplay, and ever since the variable frame rate support I haven't had any problems working with these files.  I also use .wav files created from Reaper.  However, I've tested and this problem occurs even if I use a project of just jpegs.  I also just uninstalled all adobe software yesterday, including deleting all adobe folders in %appdata%, and then reinstalled premiere fresh, with no luck.

Use Handbrake to convert to Constant Rate instead of Variable

It's a free tool that the support team at Adobe had me install.
