Timeline lagging only when Source panel is open

My timeline playback is extremely choppy using lowest playback resolution and ProRes proxies but only when the source panel is open with clips in preview. If i navigate out of the source panel to, let's sayc "Effect Controls", then timeline playback is perfectly smooth. I have a 2020 macbook pro with 16gb ram and quad core i5. The footage is R3D 5k.
