Question

Timeline lags as it goes on

I am using Premiere Pro 2021

Now, I see a bunch of people complaining about lag in general but I can't find what I'm specifically having trouble with. I can edit at 1080p60 no muss no fuss, up to a point. It seems that the farther along the timeline I get, the more the video playback slows down. Meaning that the first hour or so of footage is basically clean, no lag, but after an hour it lags enough I can't really progress.

I have tried adjusting the playback resolution in both directions, seeking problematic sequences and removing them, rerendering specific sequences, and a bunch of other stuff. I haven't tried rerendering the whole source file, but right now I'm just trying to edit an assembly cut. I'm working from a 55 gig source file and I'd have to start over from scratch at this rate. I tried with an entirely different source file and had the same issue. I'd really like to hear why this might be happening, because I've been putting this off for about three weeks now and I would really like to get back to work.

specs
AMD RYZEN 5 6-Core Processor 3.6 mhz
NVIDIA GeForce 1660 SUPER
16 gb RAM
500 GB SSD + 2 TB HDD storage

One of the most underappreciated aspects of video editing early on is the importance of the media you work with. The file size isn't very important aside from what it can suggest about the video codec you're working with. Lower file sizes often denote more compressed, meaning more trouble with playback. Higher file size can be indicative of an optimized editing codec, so easier to process.

So, that being said, what kind of media are you working with? 60fps is high framerate, and I'm assuming H264, which is an unoptimized editing codec. What did you use to record? Does your file have variable framerate?

it's 60fps all the way through non-variable; 5 hours, 52.7 gb source file. I believe I am using H264.

My confusion with this isn't that it's lagging, it's that it's lagging based on where it is in the timeline. if I scroll back to the beginning of the timeline, playback is smooth as silk, no problems. After an hour in the timeline, it stutters and jerks around, and going further just exacerbates the issue. I might not have explained that clearly.

Can you post a screenshot of a part of the timeline that is lagging?

You may need more RAM or your HDD may be slowing things.

Is there room to put the media on the SSD?

yes

the current project is in fact on the ssd

how much RAM are you theoretically suggesting

Probably add 16 GB more.

But let's wait until you answer the media questions by Phillip Harvey.
