Track Matte Key in Premiere Pro 2022 removing text

No matter what I do the track matte key removes the text I apply the matte to, I've tried this in set video tracks as well as individual tracks for the image and the text. I am using a static image for the source, could this be the problem? I've been ripping my hair out looking at previous threads for solutions and so far nothing has worked, I'm using Windows 10

If you applied position/scaling to your BMP file using the Motion settings, this can affect your Track Matte Key. It's better to use the Transform effect instead. Here's a video explaining this in more detail: https://youtu.be/j2speTWY87g

However, I would recommend using masking in the Essential Graphics panel instead of the Track Matte Key—it’s much easier to work with.

Here’s how:

  • Select your text in the Timeline.
  • Go to Window > Essential Graphics.
  • Drag your BMP file into the Essential Graphics panel under the text.
  • Select the text in the Essential Graphics panel.
  • At the bottom, tick Mask with Text and Mask Only Fill (this second option will keep the text stroke and shadow while only masking the fill).
