Transition cross hatched on one side

I have 3 clips on my timeline. 1 is 15 seconds long, 2 and 3 are 1 min long

I placed my default Cross Dissolve transition between the first and second clips and it straddled the two clips, as expected.

I tried to do the same between the second and third clips but the transition would not straddle the clips, the effect was applied the beginning of the third clip and when I went to the Effect Controls panel and tried to slide the clip to the left it got cross-hatched when it entered into the end of the second clip.

Can someone tell me why this is happening?

Longer version of Jim's answer:

The lines are an indication that there are not enough extra frames on the end of the clip to create the transition.

It means the clip on the opposite side of the cross hatched side is not trimmed back.

If you remove the transition you see why.

[New User] I'm sorry, but I don't understand "trimmed back."  When I use the mouse to slide two video/audio clips together, the little connection triangles appear on both sides of the connection. When I release the mouse, the triangle disappears from one side or the other.

I haven't "trimmed" any videos, I just drag them from the Video Segments Bin and drop them into the timeline, sliding the newly added clip within the timeline so it touches the previous clip. Sometimes the triangles remain on both sides of the connection when I release the mouse button, and sometimes the triangles disappear from one side when I release the mouse button.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

OH! I see.  If I CUT a clip there is nothing left to transition into.  Sounds like I should work from In and Out settings, so there will be enough for transitioning.

Thanks

If you want transitions you always have to trim first.
