Transparency lost when importing PSD

I've seen this brought up a few times, but I've been unable to figure it out with anything mentioned in the threads I've seen. As the title says, I'm trying to import all layers of a PSD individually. But all transparency is turned to black. I'm not familiar with exactly what the alpha channel does, but I've seen that mentioned in a few other posts. Any help for a layman is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Alpha shows as black.

Drop it in the timeline over a video image or turn on the Transparancy Grid under the wrench in the Program Window.

hmmm.  I don't need to turn on transparency grid for a clip created from a photoshop file layer to retain transparency.  Am I special... or am I just missing something

Not retain but to see if it has got an alpha channel like Ae.

Normally the background is black which is actually a void.

an alpha channel defines transparency in an image.  If you drop an imported photoshop layer into your timeline on top of a video clip, do you see the underlying clip thru the areas that are supposed to be transparent?

That did the trick! (Transparency grid). Thank you. Can't believe no one else mentioned this in the 5 other threads on the subject!
