Question

Trying to backup my project - copies entire source drive

I have (several times now) tried to use project manager as I have quite a large project  on a big heavy raid drive and I'd like to chop it down to size to make the project more portable.  The raid drive has around 15TB of material (a feature film's raw footage from a camera  shooting in higher than raw 4K) and the finished edit, i estimate, based on shooting ratios, etc. is perhaps 2TB of the 15.  I have been trying to use project manager (following the instructions I've found online/youtube vids) and the project manager keeps attempting to copy the entire source drive contents to the destination drive (an AData 4TB drive is the target I am now using).

I've been through this a few times, wasted days on two continents trying to make it happen, and seem to be in the midst of another failure.  I have checked the box to exclude unused files, I only selected the single timeline in the Project (the edited film) and still this appears to the unfortunate result.

I'm not by trade an editor/post supervisor  but the editor I was working with recently had the same issue - he tried to select all of the segments of the timeline and then run the project manager backup, with the same result.

Any help would be very much appreciated.  Running 2019 APP.

Hi gregorys17675180,

Have you tried to calculate the project size in the Project Manager to check what is the estimated file size for the final project?

This would give you an estimate about the final size based on the content of the sequence selected.

Also, you may try to uncheck Include Audio Conform files and Include Preview files and check if it's helping in reducing the size of the final resulting project.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,

it greatly underestimates the expected size, by a factor of many times (though precisely how much, its hard to say).  It expects the file size to be a few hundred GB, and then when I do the copy, it copies the whole drive.  However,  based on estimates, the real amount of footage (with or without handles) should amount to perhaps 2TB, not 200 GB.

I do click exclude unused clips.  The other items are not going to make a material difference - as the issue is that its trying to copy the entire drive, and not just the items used in the selected timeline.
