Question

Ultrastudio Express ingest captions?

After a pre-sales tech support call with Blackmagic Design in which they claim that Ultrastudio Express can ingest (capture, digitize) a clip containing captions using Premiere CC on MacOS, I purchased the box.  Now two support calls later, they still claim it works but can't tell me HOW to make it work.

I've tried capturing HD clips containing 708 captions on Line 9, and no captions come into Premiere (using CC 2017 latest version on Yosemite).  I also checked the captured clip using Media Info, and only audio and video show up.

Is anyone capturing clips containing captions on line 9 or 21 in Premiere using Ultrastudio?  In anyone capturing captions using any program?

I don't have a great deal of confidence in anyone at BMD understanding how their gear works with PC. Last year at NAB, I spent over an hour in their huge booth, with a simple question:

"To get a dedicated "Program monitor" or playback monitor on a second screen, Resolve needs an external box that I'd been told was about $100; which unit is this that I would need?"

I asked a counter supervisor ... "Oh, that would be over at that counter, I'll take you over ... " and we go, and he hands me off. "No, that's not one of these, I think that's over there ... " and off we go.

We hit every counter, and not one BMD supervisor could figure this out. I heard a lot of "Well, if you were Mac I'd know what to do ... "

So I think you'll need to hit a user-group that would involve some PC people. We have a couple here that I think use that box, and I'm pretty sure over at Creative Cow there's someone could puzzle this out with you. Hope you get an answer soon!

From my three calls to BMD so far, I would have to agree that I haven't come into contact with an engineer that fully understands their products and what they can or cannot do.

I'm using Mac, but I will check out the resources you mentioned.  Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I couldn't give you the Magic Bullet answer though ... they make cool stuff, just wish their ability to advise on the use of it was better!

    Hi Anthony,

Sounds like you're having a little trouble ingesting captions via your BlackMagic device. Let me see if I can help you with that. I'm unfamiliar with your workflow, so I may need to ask you a few questions to assist you better. Hope that's OK.

After a pre-sales tech support call with Blackmagic Design in which they claim that Ultrastudio Express can ingest (capture, digitize) a clip containing captions using Premiere CC on MacOS, I purchased the box.

I could not easily pull up info from BlackMagic Design on support for captions and this device as it relates to Premiere Pro support. Do you have a link I can source?

I did find a solution delivered to a post around a year ago with an answer marked as correct from an Adobe employee. Here is the link: HD Closed Captions to HDCam through BlackMagic UltraStudio Express

Please return to the post & let us know if that information assisted you in finding a solution or a useful workaround. Above all, please file a bug here.

Is anyone capturing clips containing captions on line 9 or 21 in Premiere using Ultrastudio? In anyone capturing captions using any program?

I hope we will hear from other users utilizing your workflow. I hope we can help you to get it to work.

    Regards,

Thanks for the reply.  I've been able to successfully "write to tape" and playout files with captions added.

My issue is digitizing or ingesting sources or clips that have captions in line 9 or line 21 or VANC, and successfully capturing the captions.
