    @PaulMurphy

    I have solved my problem by resetting Premiere preferences, and now the MP4 file (variable frame rate) is playing normally.

    When audio plays and the timecode keeps moving but the picture stays frozen, the problem is usually in how Premiere Pro is decoding the video stream, not the file itself. The most common causes are:

    • Variable frame rate (VFR) footage. Phone recordings and screen captures often use a variable frame rate, which Premiere Pro can struggle to play back smoothly.
    • Hardware decoding issues. Some H.264 and HEVC (H.265) files, especially 10‑bit or 4:2:2 files, can’t be decoded by every graphics card, which can leave the image stuck while audio continues.
    • GPU or driver problems. An outdated graphics driver can cause the same symptom.

    A couple of quick tests may help narrow it down:

    1. Choose Edit > Preferences > Media (Windows) or Premiere Pro > Settings > Media (macOS).
    2. Deselect the hardware accelerated decoding option, then restart Premiere Pro and try playing the clip again.

    Note: These are diagnostic steps. If either one fixes playback, let us know which, since that tells us where the problem is.

    To help further, please share:

    • Your exact Premiere Pro version and operating system.
    • Your graphics card model and driver version.
    • Where the video came from (phone, screen recorder, camera, download).
    • The file details. The free tool MediaInfo shows these. Look for the codec, frame rate mode (constant or variable), bit depth and chroma subsampling.
    • Whether the image freezes in the Source Monitor, the Program Monitor, or both.
    • Whether other MP4 files play correctly, and whether this file plays normally in another media player.

    With that information, we can point you to the right fix.
