Updating Motion Graphic Templates in Shared Libraries

Hi all,

Im sorry, I'm not sure if I should have posted this to the AE forum or PP but it involves motion graphic templates and libraries.

Im starting to build out templates that our team can use for all of our video projects. Intros, outros and lower thirds. Over time, I want to be able to update the templates and have that beam out to each of the team members I have added as collaborators. Im wondering if this is possible and if not, would it perhaps be added in the future?

Yes I guess you can do that, if after updating you export properly from After Effects :

Open Motion Graphics templates as a project

To edit your After Effects Motion Graphics template (.mogrt files), you can open them in After Effects as a Project file. After you edit the template, re-export it as a .mogrt file.

To open a Motion Graphics template as a project, use the following steps:

  • Select File > Open Project.

  • In the Open Project dialog, select a .mogrt file, then click Open.

  • When you open a .mogrt as a project, After Effects extracts the project file and assets. In the Extract "<filename>.mogrt" dialog, choose a location to extract the .mogrt contents, then click Extract.

You can also modify a Motion Graphics template used in a sequence in Premiere Pro 12.1 with the following steps:

  1. In After Effects, open the .mogrt file as a project. Modify one or more compositions, or add or change controls in the Essential Graphics panel.
  2. After you make the edits, in the Essential Graphics panel, click Export Motion Graphics Template button. You can either replace the original .mogrt file or select a new location or name for the updated file.
  3. In Premiere Pro, hold Option (MacOS) or Alt (Win) and drag the new or updated .mogrt from the Browse tab of the Essential Graphics panel and over the existing .mogrt clip in the sequence. Premiere Pro updates the Edit tab of the Essential Graphics panel with the new controls.

I was excited about a recent 13.1 update that I thought had promise. I tried this and, yes you can replace all of the templates on a sequence at once... but they all default back to whatever the default of the template is. So pretty useless.

Note:

Motion Graphics templates from After Effects that have been used and customized in a Premiere Pro sequence can be replaced with an updated version of the template. Hold Alt/Option while you click drag-and-drop the updated template onto the existing one in your sequence.

You can choose to have the template updated everywhere it was used in the project or limit the change to one instance. Where possible, your customizations are preserved.

    I just noted and reported it, but there currently looks to be a bug when doing that. With the automatically updated layers, the edit panel doesn't get updated if you've added items. So be cautious of what else they didn't get right. Like, if you had an old default value of 40, then in premiere you changed some of them to 45. Then you updated the mogurt and now the default is 50. Will replacing them all keep the changed value of 45, or use the new value of 50? I would expect it to keep the 45 since you changed the value, but I wouldn't trust it.
