Upgraded to Premiere 2020 - Video imports now show video at twice the speed as sound

Hi!

My Premiere recently upgraded to the 2020 version. I started my first project with this new version and I am encountering a problem (already!) My video clip which I import works fine when viewed in an external video program. However, once I import it into Premiere 2020, it shows the video moving at (what looks like at least) twice the speed as the sound. This makes for a very funny video - but it doesn't help me to create a professional project! So I've got someone speaking with his lips and movements working very quickly - with the sound for those same words arriving on the scene only a good few seconds and more later. It is not just some split second lag between video and sound - but rather a significant delay before the sound is heard. When playing - the sound works fine at the correct speed as it should. Just the video moving very fast. Obviously the sound never catches up to the movements or synchronizes with the lips.

Any ideas how to fix this? I never saw this before in the old 2019 version.

Thank you.

Okay - I managed to reset the preferences and restore to default settings. Still see the same thing. The almost 34 minutes video clip shows up at just under 17 minutes. Interestingly enough if I force it to play at half the speed and therefore get the video to stretch out to 34 minutes (artifically) - all that does is to super-slow down the audio which sounds quite scary! So - the short is that it's definitely not working in 2020.

Thanks again for this Ann. I tried following the video. My Desktop app does not look like the one shown in the video and I tried the same technique clicking ctrl-open. It did not give me any option to reset Premiere but opened normally. I see I still have the old version on that app and I just tried loading the same file into the old version and it worked fine. This means there is definitely something wrong with the 2020 version. I'll follow up if you have any other replies. Thanks again!

Ann - the clip worked at the ordinary speed. I see as I'm checking it that it loads up in the source preview pane in the top left as being twice as fast! In other words, the clip should be 34 minutes (roughly) and it is showing at just under 17 minutes! In other words, it's loaded it up as a 16 minute clip. Looking at the clip again - the whole clip has been sped up twice the speed - and in addition, the sound is lagging by a few seconds behind the graphic. Sorry for the confusion. Never seen this before - never happened in 2019.

Does the clip speed up in 2019?

Check the audio hardware in the preferences: input set to none.
