Upgrading captions to Graphics disabling rendering

Have run into a crippling issue when attempting to animate captions. The procedures I'm following are

  1. Creating captions using the transcribe and caption creation tool in PP
  2. selecting all captions and under the "graphics and titles" drop-down selecting "Upgrade captions to graphics"

What occurs is the rendering bar on the top of the timeline go "black" and my video will not rerender even when manually performing in out render. Only editing a section of the timeline will bring back a section, but once I edit another section it all goes black again. Export will only create black video with audio. It also breaks the sequence and can only be resolved by deleting caption graphics and copying all timeline elements to a new sequence.
Has anyone ever seen this or have any ideas what the issue is? I have basically abandoned adding captions in PP and use a different software.

A few questions:

A. Why is necessary to upgrade the captions to graphics? Is this a conscience decision?

B. Can you try to repeat the steps you've taken but only on a few clips? This may be a hardware related issue: that your resources are insufficient to handle all these tasks in one go.

Please let us know.

I'm not sure what that means. A screenshot might help.

There are a lot of users doing Upgrade caption to graphic, and I don't recall a problem like this.
