Question

Using a large timeline decreases the performance and starts lagging in 1-2 minutes

There's a similiar topic about this but it was mostly about Mac computers so i felt that i need to create this.

I upgraded to Premiere 2023 and had very bad performance issues in the latest days. I just tried a few things and i noticed that enlarging the timeline window causes that issue. I tried a single monitor layout and it was all fine. But i'm using two monitors and 1 monitor is filled with just the timeline. And when i re-size the timeline to the whole monitor, it starts breaking, lagging like hell.

When i close the project and re-open it, it starts fine. After changing sequences a few times, it's starting to break again.

My GPU acceleration is on, i have 32 gb ram installed on my PC, only 6 is reserved for other programs but tried to lower that and didn't work.

Tried to disable NVIDIA overlay, didn't work.

Here are the specs:

Windows 11

GeForce RTX 3060Ti

Ryzen 7 2700x CPU

g.skill Flare X 2*16 3200mhz CL16 Ram

Premiere version: 23.1

Attached a small example video.

Hello @sercanerturk,

Thanks for the message. I apologize for the lack of response to this bug report. Are you still having this issue? Let us know.

I'll move your post to the Discussions board while we await your information.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi. No i'm not having this issue anymore, i think it was fixed in 23.3, or 23.4 can't really remember.

But there's still a tempoorary performance drop when selecting multiple clips. Back in the day, selecting multiple clips were dropping the performance afterwards and you needed to restart the program. Now it's just dropping when selecting, but goes back to normal then. I uploaded another video as example.

I confirm and fully agree with @sercanerturk .

I'm experiencing this horror with performance right now. I'm more disappointed than ever. It's impossible to describe. I'll add more. After some work with the material, Premiere slows down, and when you return to the initial frames on the timeline in a 7-minute project, there is a delay of several seconds and the desired frame is marked. The same thing happens with the standard effects applied to clips. When switching clips and viewing them in the source window mode, the effects control panel freezes and does not show the applied effects. Only after a few seconds everything is displayed as it should. But, performance is not coming back. You have to reboot Premiere, after which performance returns for a while. Then everything repeats again. Super performance. Congratulations. Keep it up.

I'm working with mostly youtube videos, using 9:16 ratio sequence but yesterday, i edited something shot with DSLR, used a usual 1080p 16:9 sequence, it was 40 minutes long footage and the problem happened on both.

They are not filled with lots of effects or stuff. a few transitions of course but nothing unusual. And i was doing the same edits with 2022 and it wasn't like that.

Here's my steps to reproduce it. Create a project. At least create 2-3 sequences. Start working but switch sequences frequently (i personally use 1 sequence for my raw footages and 1 sequence for editing so i copy footages from sequence to sequence)

after a few switches, it starts to slow down. Selecting multiple clips, deselecting them, moving a clip to another spot etc. becomes veeery laggy.

But the thing is, i think if you don't switch sequence, it won't break.

Sorry about that, sercanerturk.

Please give the Premiere Pro team specs on the media you are using and the kind of timeline you are working with. Is it long or short? Laden with graphics and effects or lightweight? More info will help the team write the bug to reproduce it under similar conditions. I hope we can help you.

Thanks,
Kevin

Update: I noticed that working in standard layout doesn't fix the problem, just delays it. Working like 20-30 min.s also caused lags.
