Using external storage unit

hi, 

I am going to buy an external hard drive for my Mcbook air.

I am planning on storaging the files on the hard drive, and edit them on Premire pro

Has someone try it before, is it going smoothly? I know i will be able to work only when the hard drive is plugged, but when its plugged, will it be ok?
