Can anyone tell me how to remove the translucent V/A timing screen from my program sequence? I do not refer to it when I am assembling a video and it blocks my view of the captions.

As Ann Bens suggested, these are Monitor overlays, which can be enabled/disabled by clicking the Wrench icon in the Program Monitor or Source Monitor & then selecting Overlays. Please refer to this link to learn more about it.
