Video transitions: unable to center at cut

Sometimes when I apply a cross-dissolve (or other) transition between two video clips, I can only apply it to either the end of the first clip, or to the start of the second clip; I can't drop it on the center of the cut. I usually want it centered on the cut, but in such a case when I go into the effects panel to change it to be centered on the cut, the "Alignment" option is greyed out, so that I can't change it to be centered. I haven't been able to figure out why that sometimes happens, and how to fix it. Suggestions?  (CC 2017.)

Meg, thank you for the info.

I just discovered the cause of the latest instance of this.... the two clips involved in the transition were not completely joined, there was one blank frame between them that I didn't notice. Once I removed that, I was able to center the transition. That's possibly what caused the problem in previous cases too.  Thanks !

It's because there's no media at the end of first clip for which Premiere can use to transition from. You can read details about this here: Applying transitions in Premiere Pro
