Question

voiceover with Blackmagic decklink

Hello,
I have looked around the forum for info about this, but I don't seem to be finding any answer.
I am trying to use the voiceover tool on a timeline to record audio coming from a Blackmagic Decklink Studio 4K.

I select the blackmagic audio as Audio input, but the voiceover option is greyed out.
The card is connected via SDI and also the AES/EBU input are connected. None of these options give me the opportunity to record a voiceover.

Is there any way to make this work?

Win 10
Premiere Pro 25.3
Blackmagic Desktop Video Setup 14.5

Thanks as always,

Have you tried having the Decklink as the default audio input in your OS, then setting Premiere to 'no' default input? At that setting, it uses whatever input the OS is set to. And in my experience, Premiere works better in general using the OS to get audio input than trying to set Premiere's internal controls to it.

hello and thanks for your reply.
Interesting! I tried it and the voiceover option is available, however, there is no audio incoming.
Even more interestingly, if I open the Blackmagic Media Express software while recording, audio is coming in the Blackmagic software, and into Premiere as well.
But if I close the software, no audio is available.

We are using old Aja Kona Lhe+ on some workstations and this has never been a problem, however with the Blackmagic card we don't seem to get the same result.

Do you think this is a Blackmagic hardware related issue?

I've worked for/with/taught pro colorists for over a decade now. And that of course means extensive time around discussions of Resolve and BlackMagic hardware ... and the use of same. I've got enough BM kit to have a few extra Studio licenses in a drawer.

BM's stuff can be durn finicky. Colorists that don't use Resolve always are grateful at using AJA breakout devices because they are so much easier to setup, and to fix when an issue occurs. And that's using BM breakouts with Resolve ... with Premiere or Nuke or whatever, things can be very complex to sort out.

You are right that you may need to have the BM software up & running in order to actually get sound to Premiere. That's been an issue for quite a few users. Supposedly, you shouldn't need to, but practically, you probably do need to have that running.

It just works mostly better most of the time unless it's a Blue Tuesday in the last week of the full moon cycle ... or something ...
