Weird Color shift in Premiere

Sony cameras shoot a couple "real log" formats, and one or two that are log-looking formats, but named as if they were actual log. And that makes a darn hard problem at times. Because log-looking is not the same to modify, as log-encoded.

So that's the first hurdle with Sony media ... sigh.

try selecting a problematic clip in the project/bin window right click and choose modify: interpret footage: color management.

What is the color space down at the bottom of the page.  If it's anything but Rec709, check "Color space override" and choose Rec 709.  If that fixes the problem, congratulations.  No idea what brought this problem on, maybe a Premiere update, but this was a serious problem for me on a complex large documentary project.  This fixed it..  Happy to go into more detail if you're interested, but that's the summary..    And this problem was exclusively with material shot on sony cameras..  

If your monitor calibration was off, and you fixed it ... correctly ... then yes, it can definitely change the way things look. For the better, actually.

That is, if it is calibrated correctly. And it is so flippin' easy to make a mistake in calibration. I've done it I don't know how many times ... including running a profile of the calibration afterwards to check. And often have to redo a calibration to get it completely spot on.

Now also, depending on the media, there are new controls in Premiere that can cause things to display differently. So ... what are you shooting for media settings on that camera? Is auto-tonemapping or auto-log turned on in Premiere?

Sony A7siii. What makes this weird is I've been using this camera with the same settings for over a year so I can't see why it would change now. Expect the fact I calibrated my monitor. But again, can't see why that would affect how Premiere interprets footage

what camera was this material shot on?   There have been issues with some sony material that you need to override the color space and set it to rec709.  And there are issues with material shot on an iphone.  

I have found a workaround for the time being, but it isn't perfect. I deleted some old calibration settings from my windows computer and then I turned off 'Display Color Management' inside of premiere (Which was greyed out earlier). While this does fix the weird color shift issue, it does affect the videos I work on. I compared an exported version of my video to what I see inside of Premiere, and the exported version is slightly darker and more saturated. It could have something to do with the compensation LUT I apply during exporting, but it usually makes it more accurate to what I see inside of Premiere, not less.
