Question

What proxy size for majority 4:3 2.7K videos files?

I'm new to the entire proxy editing work flow.  I've gotten as far as creating proxies for all 786 video clips (ridiculous I know).

On this family trip I recorded primarily on the GoPro in 4:3 2.7K (knowing the added height might get cropped out when I do my final edit in a 1080p size but I wanted the flexibility to adjust the video up or down or zoom in, etc...  I do have some other video from iPhone and time-lapse that are in 4K (16:9)

I created the proxies with the 1024x540 H.264 settings.  Was this the correct thing to do?  It looks like the majority of my 4:3 video when brought into the 1080 sequence is a "square" with black bars on the side.

Any tips here, need to re-create proxies at different resolution?

Was this the correct thing to do?

It was not.

There are no 4:3 proxy presets, so you'll have to create your own.

Base it on Cineform YUV 10 bit (QuickTime Format) when you do.

I was afraid that was the case...

So here is what I think I should probably do.

1) Delete the entire proxy folder and the files created.

2) Re-"Create Proxy" specifically for the 4:3 2.7K files using an "equivalent" aspect ratio

3) I assume that for other files that were on other cameras that were 4K resolution I could keep those as they would have used the correct aspect ratio?

Anything I miss or should consider?

You need to test any workflow before you commit to it.

Try out your settings/workflow with one clip - all they way through the process (ingest/edit on timeline/export) and verify it is working as you want.

Once you are satisfied, do the rest of the source clips.

What are the pixel dimensions of the original source files?

According to this, GoPro 2.7k 4:3 footage is 2704X2028:

You would normally  want your proxies to be an evenly divisible reduction, such as 1352x1014 (the original dimensions divided by 2, for example) to maintain the source aspect ratio.
