White matte goes black behind some stills in timeline

I put together some stills for a slide show (in the timeline) and when I drop a white matte under all the stills (for a white background border when needed - the stills are different sizes etc) it is white behind some stills and then turns black behind others. Any idea why this happens? I would have thought it would be uniformly white for all stills?
