Why are my Dissolves all starting in alpha channel zero

Hey Folks,

So I'm watching online tutorials, learning how to apply a Fade In or Fade Out Trasition.

The examples I've seen, all of them actually, seem to work as intended, Fade In or Fade Out, to Black.

I'm actually trying to use the Film Dissolve transition, however, any and all of the Dissolves I've tried using are not working as the toturials show they should be working.

I've searched YouTube, and perhaps because I haven't a clue as to what to ask, I've gotten Zero results.

Okay, rant over.

Why am I not able Fade In or Out from Black?

All the Dissolves I've tried begin in a Zero Alpha Channel, showing a Blank Background, and then the scence fades into view.

Can someone Please tell me why that is?

I've checked the Sequence Settings, thinking the setting I'm looking for would be there; as in giving the stage a Background Color; I'm totally lost.

Peace,

ElementX

Correct answer Ann Bens

Fade to Black is best used as a double-sided transition

If used as single sided you need to tweak the transition in the ECP.

Ni Ann Bens,

Thank you for your insight.  A new Acronym to learn, how fun; and here I thought I'd left them all behind at Disney.

Hey there @ElementX,

I hope you have dug out of the snow by now. Hang in there. You're in the right place. No stupid questions here, especially about effects, my favorite part about Premiere Pro.

ECP = Effect Controls Panel. You can create animation for clips and find the transitions controls here. Choose Window > Effect Controls. I hope you can find it. You can control motion and opacity here. You can also add effects from the Effects panel here - Window > Effects. A whole new world to discover here! Have fun. Please return with any questions about anything. Glad to have you here.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi there,

I believe what you see is what to expect from a transition. A Fade In or Fade Out is intended to work on the beginning or end of a clip or span across two clips causing them to fade into eachother. This is made possible because the part that is actually animated from 0-100% is the alpha channel. So in the case the transition only applies to the beginning or end of a single clip with nothing underneath the image does actually get transparent.

I believe what may be happening on your screen causing the confusion is that in your program monitor the transparency grid is enabled where in the tutorial it is not? If this is disabled the image appears as black but is technically transparent.

Have a look at if this setting is turned on/off when clicking the wrench icon in the program monitor.

The silly bug/oversight on transparency grid is that this isn't shown when there is no content on the timeline under the playhead. I hope Adobe fixes this in a future update.

Hi Shebbe,

Thanks for the insight, I'll have a look after I shovel some snow; and wouldn't you know it, it's coming  down again.

Yay!

Peace,

Hi @ElementX,

Thanks for the question. I'm sorry if I'm not quite understanding what you're asking. These dissolves are the same thing as fading opacity. Is that you want to fade in or out to a different color other than black? Let the community know more so we can help you. Sorry for the issue.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

I think I made it clear that I had no clue what I was doing or rather searching for.

Yes, I was questioning why the Transitions weren't working as they should, why they weren't starting in Black and then fading to reveal the scene.

However, after spending an hour plus, or more actually, trying to figure this out, I had a brilliant idea, a realization actually.

I had closed the file and reopened it hoping that would work but, I hadn't actually closed the program.

What if I did that, what if I restarted Premiere; what would that do?

So, again thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Thankfully, I have a sense of humor, as I hope you do as well.  I've already called myself all the lovely colorful names the English language has to offer and several in Spanish as well.  I don't really know any other language but if I did, oh boy, that would have been even more "glorious"

Again, thank you, and I'm sorry for wasting your time, and for anyone else who may happen to click on this post.

If there is a moderator that could erase this buffoonish waste of time, that would be Awesome.

Peace,
