Why do my Media Encoder exports default to "Work Area" when my sequence that is sent from Premiere has no In/Out Points set?

Whenever I send a sequence from Premiere to Media Encoder, regardless of In/Out Points, ME defaults to an arbitrary Work Area that may or may not be the entire sequence. For example, I can remove all In/Out Points from a sequence that is :30. When I send to Media Encoder, it says the Work Area starts at :14.11 and ends beyond the limits of the sequence, resulting in an extra minute of black at the end of the video. There is no media in the sequence beyond :30 so why does the Work Area extend beyond it? If I toggle on and off the Work Area bar in Premiere, Media Encoder still ALWAYS defaults to Work Area for the Source Range. You can’t even remove the Work Area In/Out Points in Premiere once they are set.

This Work Area issue has been consistent across versions of Premiere + ME 2025/2026.

Is there a way to change Media Encoder from defaulting to “Work Area” for exports? Would much prefer it either being “Entire Sequence” or “In/Out Points”. Why is “Work Area” a setting when the “Sequence In/Out Point” already covers the use case but better?

Will Adobe engineers stop vibe coding unstable AI applications into their software and actually work on making a stable program? The full bore into AI-Slop tools while neglecting the rest of the software really has cratered it’s professional application.

There are posts from 7 YEARS AGO on this forum that talk about this, so either Adobe doesn’t care about their App or they don’t care about their users.

NOTE for people from the future who inevitably will still have this issue! ADOBE has stopped carrying about resolving any Bugs or creating a quality professional product. If you’re problem doesn’t relate to any of the AI apps being vibe coded into the software, you’re SOL✌

This typically happens because the Work Area was displayed the first time you exported the sequence, and Media Encoder continues to default to it.

To change this:

Click the Export tab in the top left.
Set Range to your preferred option.
Click Send to Media Encoder.

This also updates the sequence's range setting for next time.

I understand the typical issue, but I hadn’t used the Work Area at all for the sequence so that is still carrying over from somewhere, perhaps a previous editor. For large batch exports like I’m working on with upwards of 100+ deliverables, to manually open every sequence one by one and Send to Media Encoder from the export tab is terribly inconvenient “solution”. You’re help doesn’t seem to address the underlining issue / bug with Premiere Pro, but rather a work around with no accountability for the initial issue so I don’t find this helpful at all in addressing the issue at hand.

To flag issue more clearly for you:

Whenever I send a sequence to Adobe Media Encoder, it carries over old names of the sequence into Adobe Media Encoder and that then needs to also be manually changed by tabbing back into Premiere, copy and pasting the sequence name, version by version - clearly the Work Area issue is also tied to this as well as there seems to be residual data in the pipeline messing things up (even after clearing out caches and fresh installs of both programs).

For Example:

I have a sequence titled “EP022_RoughtCut1_2026-09-10” from an editor that had set up the Work Area halfway through the video. I recieve notes from a client, duplicate the sequence and rename to “EP022_FineCut1_2026-09-14” and take care of my notes and did as you said to adjust the Range to be back to being the Entire Sequence. When I “Send to Adobe Media Encoder” it says the correct sequence name (FineCut1) for the queue item, but the OUTPUT FILE NAME still defaults to the old sequence name “EP022_RoughCut1….” with the old “Work Area” setting that carried over that I still have to manually adjust in Media Encoder.

I've seen this bug too: sending a sequence via File > Export > Send to Adobe Media Encoder can pull the wrong sequence name, which is why I avoid it for batch exports.

To send a batch of sequences to Adobe Media Encoder with the correct sequence name, and set the Range for all of them at once, use File > Export > Media instead:

Choose File > Export > Media.
Set Range to your preferred option. This applies to all selected sequences.
Click Send to Media Encoder in the bottom left.

Yup, this occurs both when exporting from Project Panel and from Timeline to ME.

Are you sure that you’re selecting the sequence in the Project Panel before sending for export?

Yes, I typically do batch exports of 3-5 sequences from the Project Panel given the number of deliverables - behavior occurs both when sending from the Project Panel (sequences closed in timeline) as well as when the individual sequence is open in the timeline (with the Work Area bar closed).
