Why does my project consistently crash during export at the 40% mark?

I have a project that crashes each time I try to export. It always happens around the 40% mark but I have no way of knowing what clip or frame is causing the issue. There are no fancy FX, just jump cuts and a few dissolves. I do have a multi-cam sequence in the timeline, but see below.

Fixes I've tried that have not worked:

  • restarted computer
  • created a new sequence and copied the old sequence content into it
  • created a new project and imported the old one
  • rendered In to Out and exported using render files
  • flattened all multi-camera sequences

System Info

Premier Pro CC 2019 – Version 13.1.2 (Build 9)

Mac Pro (Late 2013)

3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5

64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3

AMD FirePro D700 6 GB

macOS Mojave 10.14.4

Huh ... it's got some issues with some of the b-roll clips ... or something.

Have you deleted the cache/cache database with Pr closed, rebooted, then relaunched Pr? Give it a couple minutes to re-create the cache files, and see if it's behaving properly.

Hi Neil,

I thought I'd let you know I just solved this issue.

I'm editing off of a QNAP Thunderbolt NAS (the TVS-1282T3 to be exact). Because my editing machine is a 2013 Mac Pro, I have to use the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter from Apple to take advantage of the speed of the RAID. A few months ago, the Thunderbolt connection to the NAS became very unstable and I started mounting the share using AFP – which fixed the instability issues I was having over SMB (dropping connection at random/trouble copying large files).

I moved over to another project today and had the same issue with the render failing out of Premiere – which made me realize the issue was global within Premiere and I needed to rethink it.

Turns out, when I reconnected to the NAS using SMB, Premiere Pro was able to export the project just fine.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions!

So it just crashes without any error messages?

Try moving the media involved to a different folder, then relink them. And also try setting an in/out from around 20% to 50% points. See if the problem is that area or simply the sequence.

How long is the export sequence, and how much space do you have on the drive you're exporting to? Note that Pr typically needs 4-5 times the expected file size free to complete an export.

Thanks Neil.

It gives the generic "A serious error has occurred and Premiere needs to shut down" or something to that effect. The sequence is roughly 5 minutes and 30 seconds and I have about 500 GB of free space on the target drive.

This is basically a talking head video with V1 containing the interview (which is a multicam sequence) and V2 containing b-roll. I deleted all clips from V2 and the export finished just fine so maybe there is a clip in V2 that Premiere doesn't like for whatever reason. This is my second of two projects shot on the RED Gemini as an A cam and Canon 5D Mk iv as the B camera. I had no issues editing the R3D intercut with files straight off of the 5D during the first of the two projects.

I'll give your suggestions a shot.
