Why does Premiere create .pek files in the original footage folder?

When I import any video / audio to Premiere a .pek file shows up next to the original file, this is very inconvenient for me because I have folders with only sound effects and videos and I don't want these files here. How can I change the location of these files to the project folder or anywhere else?

Go to Edit > Preferences > Media Cache and un-check "Save .cfa and .pek files next to original media if possible" and see if that helps when you import new media.
