Why does premiere keep crashing when I try to add text/captions?

Recently I’ve had this issue where Premiere gets REALLY slow and gets a “Not Responding” status whenever I try to add/edit text or captions. This problem doesn’t seem to be specific to any video file format either. Which, has seemed strange to me because I assume my computer has the hardware to handle it. I have an RTX 5080 and Ryzen 9. 

I tried deleting my cahce files, but that only temporarily solved the problem. I updated my graphics drivers and that didn’t work either. My renderer is set to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (CUDA). I’m running version 26.5.

I haven’t been able to find much of a solution so I thought I’d ask here.

    Thanks for the detailed info, that's really helpful. A couple of quick questions and a few tests that should help narrow this down.

    First, what version of Windows are you running, and where are your project file and media stored (local SSD, external drive, or network drive)?

    A few things worth testing:

    1. Create a new project and try adding text or a caption to an empty sequence. If it behaves normally, the issue is likely tied to something in your current sequence/project rather than the app itself.
    2. Reset your Premiere preferences. This rules out a corrupted preferences file as the cause, which can sometimes produce exactly this kind of localized freeze.
    3. Open Task Manager and watch it while the freeze happens. Seeing whether CPU, GPU, or RAM spikes to 100 percent (or nothing moves at all) will tell us a lot about where the bottleneck actually is.

    Let us know what you find and we can go from there.

    Hey Paul, thanks for the reply. 

    Reseting my preferences made things faster.  

    I didn’t consider the plugins I had installed that might’ve been causing the issue. Lo and behold, I had an outdated plugin installed. Once I uninstalled that, the crashing stopped and things are faster now.
