Why I am happy and sad I don't use Premier Pro

First of all, I want to say I have used Premiere Pro since the 90s so I have seen a lot change throughout the years. Ever since 2006 Premier Pro has become increasingly unstable and coming from a small content creator / contractor I can express my frustration and can say without a doubt that %90 of all NLE editing companies do not give a “You know What” about the small guy.  But lets get back to why I don’t use Adobe Premiere any more. Crashing and instability. Chances are if you don’t stack effects or use more than 3 layers in your video or finish a project in a day its most likely stable for you. But… If you have ever stacked 15+ layers used custom transitions, titles and multiple nested sequences, you have wanted to pull your hair out finishing a project in Premiere. There is always some error on export or some issue you must work around in order to keep the application from crashing. Clearing cache and rendering outside of Premiere and then importing is a common workflow when you really wish you could not exit the application for some simple effects or have to chase down some export error.

Ok that is why I am glad I left Premiere Pro for DaVinci Resolve and I must say DaVinci resolve is extremely stable with a well-built PC.

Let’s talk about why I am sad I left. But I must point out recently was forced to use it once more on a contract Job. Surprise, surprise, it’s still crashing. SMH (Fresh install Good well-built PC 9 core intel RTX 3060 SSD dedicated video drives 64GB system ram and only a 1080p project.

I still prefer Premiere Pro for editing video with stacked effects and not having to use Fusion for super simple masks and other strange non intuitive functions that leaves you scratching you head why? Plus, the ability to customize your user interface that works for you and not forced to use what they think is best. But with all that said, I will put up with that in order to not want to throw my PC out a window finishing projects.

Hopefully somebody at Adobe will see this post and maybe the stars will align and Adobe decides to start from scratch and actually make a Premiere Pro that is stable efficient and can provide professionals with the great features it has always had. But… not leave us in frustration wanting to set our PC’s on fire quit our jobs and just live a life as a Hobo because you have literally gone insane using the application.

I will not hold my breath!

Happy Holidays everyone! You know what I want for Christmas now Adobe!

Hey, have a great time!

Frustrating that you've had so many issues with Premiere. I know that clearly, some people do, and others just don't. Why? Drives me nuts wondering why about that. But you gotta use what gets the work out to the nice people what pays your bills. At the end of the day, no one cares if we've used whatever app, just that the job is done right and on time. With the fancy hammers these apps are.

I also understand the preference for working in Premiere. I also work in both Pr and Resolve ... I love the customization of workspaces and the amazing ability to map my full Elements panel not only to any color controls I want ... but to use if as an audio mixer, for sizing/placing/rotating graphics and other image elements,  nudging things, geez ... about anything.

Resolve doesn't let you customize your workspaces AT ALL. Nor do they allow the user to set control surface mappings. And their putrid mapping for the Elements is clearly designed to drive you into buying one of their panels, which of course ... you can't remap, and ... they only work in Resolve. Different profit model there. Relatively cheap software to get us to buy their hardware.

And I've enough BM hardware now that I've got several full Resolve licenses sitting in a drawer someplace. Ha.

I do not like their UI at all. But then, a good friend totally LOVES the Resolve UI. And hates the Pr one. So he's happier than a clam in Resolve, while I work there when I have to.

The only two things I like about being in Resolve ... even though their UI sucks to my eyes, at LEAST they have modern methods for using multiple monitors! They use the monitor by name when you are setting it up for mulitple monitor use. Not by +/- pixel counts from the upper left corner pixel of the 'main' UI monitor, like Pr does. Which is super dorky, kludge to the max.

And of course, the deeper color tools. More like unto what was available in olden days within the Adobesphere whilst SpeedGrade was still available.

Ah well ... get that work out!
