Why is my multicam edit suddenly completely randomized?

Hi, Everyone. This was a tough one to even know how to search properly, but here goes:

I had a multicam edit that was working perfectly normally a few weeks ago, then I opened it up earlier this week and it is suddenly completely randomized. The actual synced source multicam sequence is still just fine. My process for this edit is the same as I’ve always done for years, but this one has suddenly randomized. Here’s my workflow:

  • I transcribe the audio track within premiere.
  • I create a multicam sequence by selecting two camera angles and one audio file, and sync by timecode.
  • I open the multicam sequence in the source viewer, play it as I read through the transcript tab, and add clips to a “Selects” sequence using the traditional marking of in and out points and either overwriting or inserting.
  • I then copy/paste (either by actual copy/paste, or by dragging from one sequence to the next) from selects into my working sequence.
  • I edit/refine that, switch cameras, etc. All the normal editing practices.

Except now, when I open Premiere, all of my edits are completely randomized as if the multicam clips have gone crazy and forgot their relationship to the source media (which is still perfectly synced if I open the multicam in a timeline or source viewer.

This is happening with just one of my multicam projects. Others are fine, but something about this one has changed, and I for the life of me don’t know what has happened. Probably because it’s the one due this week, haha. Any and all theories are welcome!

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the thought. While that isn’t what happened here, I am embarrassed to say what it was and how long it took me to get there. But I leave this post live so I can wallow in my own humility. And for posterity.

I’d forgotten (as it’s been month since I’d been in the project) that AFTER I’d edited this project, I’d trimmed the actual source clips in multicam sequence (that served as the source for my edit) for another completely random task. I’d forgotten that I’d done that (like I still don’t remember doing it). So once I found the culprit, I “untrimmed” the clips, opened my edit sequence and Presto!

    Thanks again!

Are you able to share screenshots of your main timeline and your multicam source sequence?

My first thought was could it be you’re editing a nested version of your selects sequence rather than the multicam source sequence? In which case, if you make an edit to the selects sequence, it will offset every clip in your edit.

Hey, we have all done things we realize moments or days later were not … necessarily ...helpful … to getting a project done. It is frustrating and yes, if seen by someone else, often a bit embarrassing. Been there done that … yup.
