Workflow advice on HD screen recording/editing/exporting

I need advice on the best method for recording my Macbook Pro desktop, uploading the clips into a Premiere project, combining/editing and exporting them for upload to YouTube in full HD. The screen caps I'm getting from my SnapsPro X look great initially but they're losing quality when exported. I've had to reduce export quality to What am I doing wrong?

Here are what I believe to be the most critical questions I'm trying to answer:

  • What is the best screen capture software to use, and why?
  • What resolution should I set my Apple Cinema HD display (with a range of 1024x640 to 1920x1200)
  • Is there a browser that works better for this purpose than another?
  • Should I use the browser's accessibility tools to increase the magnification and, if so, to what?
  • What Premiere sequence settings should I use (my default is DV 1080p30)?
  • What export settings (my default is Match Sequence)?

I really want these videos to look good and know that others have already mastered this process. Please give me the benefit of your wisdom!

Thanks in advance.

Step 2b should handle that.

Check out Screenflow -

Video editing and screen recording Software &#x7c Telestream ScreenFlow &#x7c Overview

It is really excellent, complete software. You go from capture to edit to export all within one application.

Thanks! This is the first piece to my puzzle but I'll need to do more editing than can be accomplished outside of Premiere. Crawls, fades, zooms, transitions as well as lower thirds, audio tracks, and titles. What is the best workflow for this software? Should I record at the highest resolution possible or would browser zooming be better? So many unanswered questions...

Screenflow can do most of those things - the only thing I'm not certain about is a crawl. It is extremely powerful. You can add callouts to mouse clicks, etc., zoom in and out, add and edit audio tracks, add titles,  do transitions etc.

If you are bound and determined to edit in Premiere (where you'll have to manually, for example, add a highlight to a mouse click,) you can capture your screen recording in Screenflow (or any other screen capture software, including built in QuickTime) and then export it as a high quality file in the format you want.

If you are going to do any zooming in on portions of the screen in Premiere, you'll need to make sure you export is from your capture software at a much larger frame size than the pixel dimensions of the timeline you are editing on.
