External HDMI display looses signal on Apple M1 Macbook Air

Steps to reproduce:
    1. When using editing on the timeline, or exportin video for no apparent reason

2. The laptop lid is closed and I am using an external HDMI monitor with a USB to HDMI hub
 
Result: The system behaives as if the HDMI cable had been unplugged and makes the chime that a hardware change occured. The monitor reports no singal.

Sometimes the system will come back after 20 seconds sometimes I have to unplug the hub and plug back in. The application doesn't appear to have crashed but this only happens when using Premiere.
Expected: Video would work without crashing.
