Some 22.0 Beta Follow-Up Feedback

Checked out the beta again, and things seem to be moving along well! Kudos to the team! I know the big focus on the new version is Import, Export, and Toolbar. My feedback below is just 1 specific thing from each category that I think needs addressing before it goes primetime.

1.) Import: Ingest Settings

The Import workflow has a "Import settings" panel, and that's great! However I believe it is missing the best possible feature that can be leveraged here, and that are Ingest settings. Adding options for copy/transcode/create proxy/rename/etc. would be fantastic here. Currently, we'd have to import media the old way to take advantage of this, which bypasses the new workflow entirely.

2.)Export: Crop/Scale options

While not the backbone of every export, I consider it to be a core part of the export environment. Being able to perform an on-export scale or crop is in my opinion, critical, despire how infrequently some may use it. There's plenty of UI space for it too! (above the preview frame)

Bonus feedback: I'd say go ahead and get rid of the [...More] button in Video settings. If someone is twirling down Video in the first place, they're probably savvy enough to get to the meat of it all with stuff like bitrate and hardware/software encoding. Right now, it's just an extra click that seems unnecessary. If folks want a simpler export experience, that's what the Presets and Quick Export are for.

3.) Toolbar: Workspaces and the potential loss of "One Press Workspaces"

I get the desire for a clean UI toolbar on top, I really do. However, I don't think the possibility of "one press workspaces" should go away entirely, and there is a problem that arises with the new setup which has to do with the way keyboard shortcuts are handled.

Keyboard shortcuts can only be set for "Workspaces 1-9" which is entirely based on alphabetical order. This means, with the new setup, if you have more than 9 workspaces (and considering there are 12 workspaces by default you can't delete - this means EVERYONE), you cannot assign some workspaces to a keybind. Meaning, a "one press" option for that is completely gone.

So I think the compromise here is one of two things:

  • Provide 3 icons on the top which are "workspace salvos" where you can load your 3 most used workspaces into them. The icon can be clean and tidy like the others, perhaps next to the workspace dropdown button.
  • Allow workspaces to be assigned to "numbers" from the Edit Workspaces panel. So for example, I can make a workspace that might be 15th alphabetically, and label it as "Workspace 1" which is connected to the Workspace 1 keyboard shortcut. (A good comparison is how Track Height presets and Source Assignment presets are handled)

Both options keep the cleaner UI, but don't risk losing "one press" workspaces.

Keep up the great work!

1) Ingest ... SO agree with you! Ingest settings can be huge in so many situations.

2) For some uses this is de rigor, for most not, but you're right: there is easily room to allow it to be a displayed option. I like users getting options.

3) DEFINITELY needs rethinking on the workspaces. I've got 9 custom workspaces that I routinely use. So using the Edit Workspaces I move most of the default ones outta sight, and thanks to Jarler Leirpoll's excellent book, know that you can title a workspace with a leading number to cause PrPro to put them in the order you want.

But much as I use a ton of key-shorts, I don't wanna mess with memorizing all my workspaces also. There's room, I just want that workspace bar back!

Thanks very much for the thougthful feedback! Adobe's a big company and while it might not always be obvious, we read and appreciate the feedback customers give us. The people working on the new user experience all saw your feedback.

Would you mind if I contact you via email to setup a conversation about some of your comments? My area of focus is cloud collaboration and I'm interested in hearing your thoughts about the ingest settings section.

Thanks!

Fergus
