Text based editing not editing "active text"

After clicking the "Edit Active Text" button in the text window, making gramatical changes, and then clicking out of the text field, nothing about the text I edited has changed.  I also am not able to delete text and have it affect the timeline as I had been able to do earlier. 

The "Automatically set in/out points" button is selected, and doesn't seem to make a difference.

My source was highlighted in the timeline window, so it should have edited.

Any help appreciated.
