Is it a true competitor or does it have a ways to go before it's ready for primetime.

I have been using keyshot for a while and just added substance to my adobe account for Painter and Designer. Trying to like stager but it is still missing some key fundemental features like rendering que (You have to start one render at a time, you can't just load up a bunch of renders in a que and let them cook all night), limited animation options, etc. However if you are in the substance and adobe playgrounds it's nice to stay in the same sandbox. Within the Substance family both Modeler and Stager have a long way to go, Painter and Designer are excellent legacy packages of course. If you are looking for a well developed renderer that is optimized for product rendering in production enviroment I would go wtih keyshot. if you love making deep material substances in designer and/or organically painting your models in painter then Stager is a nice in the family option. If Adobe really presses full court into Substance modeling and rendering with their resources the substance family could have huge potential. By the way, as an ex freeform user I love that Substance Modeler is voxel based, Adobe just needs to really build out the tools and features in their Modeler.

IMHO Adobe 3D Stager with Adobe Substance 3D +Illustrator and Ps have on its right way to become one of the best ecosystem.. I am not KeyShot user but it also looks great.
