i have scoured adobe manuals, google etc high and low ..... what is the subsurface material (in stager) what does it do, how do you use it.?

Our PBR guide is indeed what I would suggest to anyone who desire to learn more about texturing in general. But to tell you a little bit more about Subsurface Scattering, this is basically a channel dedicated to simulate lighting passing through the material. The usual example is light through fingers.

 

 

The Subsurface Scattering is very useful for skins.
