Appearance of Bulleted Lists & Checkmark Webdings Character in IE vs. Firefox

I am a RoboHelp X5 user and have noticed that bulleted lists and checkmarks (a webdings character) in published files are distorted when displayed in Firefox (version 3.0.15, the latest version 8, and perhaps other versions) and want to know if there is a way to resolve this.  When I use Internet Explorer (vresion 7.0.5730.11), the bulleted lists and checkmarks appear as they should.

  • The bulleted lists show the line of text in the following paragraph beneath the bullet rather than adjacent to the bullet.
  • The checkmarks  that show as checkmarks in IE 7.0.5730.11 show up as the character "a" in the aforementioned Firefox versions.

A pdf is attached showing the differences in appearance of bulleted lists and the checkmark in both IE and Firefox. Any input welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Judy,

    1. I did a small test for you:

    IE 5.5 and IE6 show a square.

IE 7 and 8 show the check correct

FF 3.6 (and probably all other versions) show the check correct

Chrome 4 and Safari 4 (windows) show the check correct

If you also want to support IE 5.5 and 6, please use an image.

    2. It should solve the problem. Note that it will only work correct if you first create the list using the list button and then choosing the style. (As you're already doing.)

    Hi,

How did you add the checkmarks? You best add them trough the HTML view using the code ✔ See also http://tntluoma.com/sidebars/codes/

As for the bullets, can you share your css and an example topic so we can have a look?

    Hi William,

I'm not sure how to reply to you...  I went to the forum and couldn't figure it out.  This email is a direct response to the email sent to me from you through the forums page.  Please let me know if you do receive this.  In any case, thank you for your info.  Very helpful!

    Two Questions:

    1) If I insert the ✔ code into the html, will it be viewable as a checkmark in any version of any browser?

    2) Many of the bulleted paragraphs (but not all) that are having that unusual presentation problem were created under the Normal style, manually highlight, and made "bulleted" by clicking the bullet button.  For some of these, I've tried just creating a BULLETS paragraph style, and applying this style to the problematic text, and it seems to solve the problem.  Will this solve the problem when viewed through any version of any browser?

    Thank you so much!
