Question

Application Preferences > Grammar and Spell Check > Use offline spell checker > User Dictionary keeps getting reset.

I am using RH 2026.01.11.

In 2025 (on a previous version of RH), I started training a few individuals to use RoboHelp. I shared with them the User Dictionary I had created over the years. You can access the User Dictionary from the SPELL CHECK pane’s cog wheel icon using the info in this post’s title.

I determined at that time the system was storing the User Dictionary data, at least for us, in an en-US.json file located at: C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\RoboHelp\2022\dictionaries.

I am again the only one working on the set of RoboHelp files I maintain. I noticed my en-US.json file in that location had been reset/cleared/replaced. It had a file size of 1 KB. Using the version I saved in 2025, I replaced the 1 KB file with my saved version. I ran the spell check. RH used the updated version, appropriately skipping terms/items I had already added to the dictionary. I added new items to the User Dictionary.

If I closed and then reopened RH, I noticed two things. Sometimes the en-US.json file in that location still gets reset to 1 KB. Sometimes it gets reset to the file I copied from 2025 (it has the same 2025 date and file size, without the new terms/items I added). In neither case, all my new additions are lost.

Questions:

  • Should that process still work? Does RH still store terms/items added to the User Dictionary in a file similar to the en-US.json file?
  • If yes, is the path listed above the correct path to that file, or is there a different path where the “source” file might be stored?
  • For anyone else who may be using the User Dictionary, have you noticed any terms/items disappearing from the dictionary?
  • I have multiple projects. Is there any chance that User Dictionary is not shared between all the projects, and that using the spell check in Project B might clear/reset the User Dictionary I updated when working on Project A?

Thanks!

Those questions require a detailed understanding of RoboHelp’s workings. I suggest for this one you need to go to Adobe Support. See https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/enterprise-support.other.html#robohelp for your Adobe Support options. The email link tcssup@adobe.com is recommended as it reaches a team dedicated to Technical Communication Suite products including RoboHelp.

My site www.grainge.org includes many free Authoring and RoboHelp resources that may be of help.
