Can I use Robohelp as an XML editor?

Can I use Robohelp 9 stand-alone application as a "pure" xml editor/platform? (no Framemaker integration). No XHTML topics. Just pure DITA xml topics (.xml files) and single-source them to CHM and PDF.

If so, please direct me to "how to" information about how to set up robohelp 9 as an XML production platform.

I contacted Tom Aldous by email and here is his answer:

"RoboHelp is an XHTML editor. You can edit, create and publish DITA XML in FrameMaker 10 and it will use RoboHelp to publish (under the covers)."

Thank you, however, I viewed that information before asking my question in the forum. I find Tom's discussion confusing because he indicates Robohelp is a "real" xml editor, but then he seems to backtrack and indicate it's an XHTML editor (tags are HTML not XML) and you need Framemaker as the XML platform. Maybe I am misunderstanding what he is trying to communicate.
