Chapter numbers in TOC?

Hi,

I am wondering if there is a way to:

1. Print the chapter numbers in Word using some sort of autonumbering method and
2. Have the chapter numbers appear on the same line as the chapter name (e.g., Chapter 3: Setting up XXX).

Thank you!

I am assuming you want numbering to be applied as you generate from RH. There is no option built in to RH so the temptation would be to create a template where your Heading 1 style has numbering applied. You could try that but I think it will fail or it may cause other problems. I see a number of print problems and so many occur when people use their own templates. There is nothing wrong with them, just that many fail with RH output.

What I suggest you try is this using a copy of your project. Either create a copy of the Style Mapping template if it is in your project already or create a copy of the master style mapping template which you should find in C:\Program Files\RoboHelp Office\RoboHTML\PrintDocExt. Open that copy in Word so that you are working on the template. Don't mess with the content. Just wade in and change the Heading 1 style and then generate selecting the template in the last page of the wizard. If the numbering has been applied offer something to the gods.

More likely it will not have. However, if you select the first example and reapply the style, It may well then appear but that will only be of real use if it also kick starts the other headings into displaying the numbering. Alternatively you could try going to Templates and Add Ins in Word and selecting Update Styles. You will need to close and reopen the document. Also you will need to turn it back off afterwards.

At this point you may well have what you want but I am dubious. If you have, please post back exactly what you needed to do. More likely it has not worked or if it has, it is all just too klunky (although not all the steps need to be repeated each time and it is not quite as bad as it sounds). Nonetheless, I am expecting you to say, thanks but no thanks.

There is another option. In the Print Layout Wizard you can change the book names and add Chapter ## in front of the book name. It is a bit tricky as what you have to do is click the chapter title and edit it but leave the cursor in the field, do not click outside. When you click Next it will not move the wizard on, instead it saves the edit. Unless you later change the layout, you'll only need to do this once.

There's a whole load of stuff on my site about Printing and Print Issues.

Let us know what you decide to do and how well it works.

How will that generate numbered headings from RH which was what the poster wanted rather than something done in Word post generation?

Try reading up on the Word Help. Look for "fields."

Hi, thanks for your help.

I ended up using the solution in the final paragraph and edited the chapter names in RH's print layout page!
