Question

Does RoboHelp 2020 support What's This (text only) help?

It looks like this is no longer an option in RoboHelp 2020, but I would like to verify before I talk to our engineers about it.

You will need to check with Adobe that there isn't a method that @Jeff_Coatsworth and myself are missing.

See https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/enterprise-support.other.html#robohelp for your Adobe Support options. The email link tcssup@adobe.com is recommended as it reaches a team dedicated to Technical Communication Suite products including RoboHelp.

All I am adding is that for other online outputs there is something close to it, not the same thing however.

Thank you for the information. I emailed Adobe.

Whilst not what is wanted here, for the sake of completeness, there is a close equivalent for online outputs in 2020. See Microhelp.

So is that a definite "No" that RoboHelp 2020 does not support this? I talked to my engineering group and they would like me to confirm 100% that this is not supported before deciding how to move forward. For clarity, this is the area of RoboHelp 2019 Classic that I am talking about.

As Peter says, you'll have to contact the RH folks for a "definitive" answer - but I'm unclear if you've actually got a copy of RH2020 that you're trying out or not. If not, then I would suggest downloading a trial copy on some non-production machine, updating it to the latest version, and upgrading a copy of your RH2019 project - and then see what you can or can't do CHM-wise (frankly, I haven't looked at those in a donkey's age - everything now is going HTML5).

In that case, if it's a CHM-thing, I would expect that it would still be there in RH2020 (because CHMs don't change or get updated anymore). Are you all patched up (Patch 7 as of May 2022)?

Since Winhelp was deprecated by MS back in Windows Vista, no, I wouldn't expect RH to still be able to create it. I think the oldest form it creates is CHM format files (Microsoft Compiled HTML files).

I was talking about the text only (What's This) help for CHM files. RoboHelp 2019 Classic supported it. A text file assocated the context ID with the text to show in the mini-popup windows.

Are you talking about that old Winhelp-based feature where you clicked on ? and then clicked on an element you wanted to know about & a little popup would appear?

    Yes
