Duplicate Topics in Printed Documentation

I'm getting many duplicate topics in my printed documentation. I have a flat list of topics with no books that might be responsible. I am generating a single document. Suggestions?

The date on the template file is 4/10/2003. Curiouser and curiouser. Anyway, I'm getting the output I want by manually attaching a different template after generating the printed doc, so I think my immediate problem is solved. I'll restore the backup style mapping template once I supply this deliverable. Thanks again!

Can't you strip most of the content from a copy and replace with "This is sample text"?

If you have topics starting with Heading 2 style, that could be part of the problem.

Wadya mean, heading two topics. Topics start with heading one.

Anyway, can you send an email attachment that size? If email me and I will send you some FTP instructions. You can contact me via my site.

Looks like the content is a little too sensitive for me to send to you. Sorry and thanks for trying.

Have you tried creating another print layout. No need to trash the existing one. Just right click on Single Source Layouts and create another Printed Documentation layout.

How big is the project zipped up?

Oh, yeah. My whole reason for using RoboHelp for this project is the need to spit out different flavors of printed documentation for customers. I have three different print layouts, all of which suffer the same problem. Looks like it's mostly Heading 2 topics. The whole project is about 19 MB zipped, including all three print outputs.

The supplied template is dated 21/09/02 so I suspect you are looking at a template you have modified.

When you get to fix this later, are you looking at the copy in the project or the copy in C:\Program Files\RoboHelp Office\RoboHTML\PrintDocExt?

Would you mind sending me a zipped copy of the template that causes the problem? I would be interested in trying to track why it does so at some point.

Hmm. Not likely, as I only installed the product two months ago. And just in case I had duplicated templates, I searched my whole disk for instances of style mapping.dot. They all had the same date. One possible scenario is that the project I inherited had an altered template and I somehow contaminated mine with it. I'll send the template later today.

If you have a folder in the TOC linked to a topic (so that when users click on that folder the topic is displayed by default) and the same topic is one of those listed in the TOC within the folder, then you get two copies of the topic. We have this with our X5.

Quick check, if you right-click on the TOC folder and one of the options is Edit then it has a linked topic.

Annoying as its a logical thing to do, have clicking on the folder open it to display the topics within and also display the first topic.

That's the first time I've heard of the Style Mapping template causing the duplicate topic problem. It sounds like maybe you have been editing that though so hopefully using the supplied copy will fix things. You did keep a copy of the template as supplied didn't you? What's the date of the file within RoboHelp's Program Files directory?

You are obviously aware of the usual cause.

Have you checked the list of topics in the print layout or are you assuming it is a repeat of the TOC, it isn't?

If that is not it, take a copy of your project and then let's work with that.

First try attaching one of the supplied style sheets instead of your own. Forget appearance for now, we just want to see if it has any impact?

Then use the Style Mapping template if you are using anything else.

Then create a new project and import on the offending topics into that. Same problem?

Please post back.

I had already run through most of your suggestions, but getting the gist of your post, I started from the beginning and isolated each setting in the process of printed doc conversion. I isolated the duplicates to the style mapping.dot template. As soon as I apply that template, dulicates and triplicates begin to appear. Perhaps the fact that my original document was authored using a custom template and then imported into RoboHelp has something to do with it. For now, I am going to restore an old version of style mapping.dot and see if the problem persists. Thanks!!!
