Error message received with word doc output

I am using 2022.2 and have the same error message generating Word output.  Interestingly (or frustratingly!) my output was a duplicate of one that works just fine from the same project, just with different Table of Contents, and Condition, Expression.

    There's a number of things you have given me to go on now but first let's resolve this reference to mergedhelp.

    • Please confirm this project has nothing to do with a merged help output.

    You say "The working files end up in C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\RHTMP - they remain for failed output but are deleted if successful (watch this in Explorer during build)."

    • The output goes to wherever you set in the preset. Please change that to something like C:\RhTestOutput.
    • Staying if the build fails and being deleted if it works is normal.
    • When you refer to failed and working, you are referring to the two copies of the project, correct?

    You say "Now the latter file mergedHTML turns out to be good output for my current purpose in that it does have all content as expected.  If I copy all of that from browser to Word document I actually get what I need"

    • You are copying a good output from a browser. We are talking about Word documents here so what has a browser got to do with it?

    You say "The project istelf does have unused files and broken links (mostly to CSS) and some topics use a very messy CSS file so I'll do housekeeping and report back.  That CSS is only called by topics in the failed output so that is probably a clue."

    • A very big clue and probably the root cause. Create a new preset without referencing any Word template in the Word settings. Does it now generate?
    • If not, save a copy of content.css somewhere and then open the project copy in the editor and open the css that is not giving grief in the editor. Trash what is in content.css and copy in your own css. Map and test that.

    Finally does the About RoboHelp sample project work OK? RoboHelp creates two copies of the samples on installation.

    The copy to use is put in My RoboHelp Projects in the Documents folder that Windows creates in your profile.

    Another copy goes into Program Files and should never be run from there as Windows will block some of the functionality.  The idea of the copy in Program Files is that it is a clean back up if you need to replace the copy in Documents.

    You say "The mergedHTML.htm is a temporary file used by RH" but I don't think I have seen it. Neither is "39 p6 Should not have a unit with more than one term" a file I have seen.

    Creating two copies of your TOC and deleted different halves of the content. Does one work and the other fail?

    Thanks for responses.

    Splitting into two halves gave errors for both.  I'll subdivide some more to see what sticks - it has a fair bit of conditional text & graphics, snippets, drop downs and so on.

    The working files end up in C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\RHTMP - they remain for failed output but are deleted if successful (watch this in Explorer during build).  For the failed output, the subfolders are;

      __doc         folder - which is empty

     contents     folder of project's directory structure and all expected .htm css, image files etc

      __details.txt   file - contains single line, in this case

                           C:/Users/xxxx/AppData/Local/Temp/RHTMP/Word - Top-HalfM1HlaC/mergedHTML.htm

      _rhdefault.css

      mergedHTML.htm

    Now the latter file mergedHTML turns out to be good output for my current purpose in that it does have all content as expected.  If I copy all of that from browser to Word document I actually get what I need - but would still like to solve this issue in due course.

    The project istelf does have unused files and broken links (mostly to CSS) and some topics use a very messy CSS file so I'll do housekeeping and report back.  That CSS is only called by topics in the failed output so that is probably a clue.

    Thanks again!

    The mergedHTML.htm is a temporary file used by RH.  These are the last few lines of the log file;

    Merging contents/Bookends/Master_Library.htm...

    Converting mergedHTML.htm

    ENOENT: no such file or directory, lstat 'C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Temp\RHTMP\Word - xxxxGJiXXC\xxxx.docx'

    Failed to generate Word - xxxx. Check log for more details.

    No previous errors in that log file.  It seems to get all the way through, but fail at the last hurdle.
