Question

Failer to create PDF

RobotHelp is failing to create the PDF document from my project. It is able to produce the HTMLHelp and other forms. When attempting to create the pdf document it process for 3 minutes then reports "Internal error encountered, Failed to generate Printed Documentation." I need more specifics ... please send additional suggestions on how to identify/solve this problem.

I can forward screenshot or other details ... apparently need to do that via email... please provide an address.

Not what I wanted but I am now finding myself unable to generate a PDF direct. I am not getting the failure messages but either it hangs forever or it closes RoboHelp.

Bobby. I will copy you in on an email to VK.

Dang ... I was hoping this was an installation issue. Do you have a bug report in ... how can I formalize that?

This was mentioned breifly before, but I do not think it was addressed. Does this work from new projects? Even better, does this occur from the sample projects that we provide with RoboHelp?

This issue happens on new, empty, samples and most importantly ... on my projects.

After reinstalling with Elements, you did tick the PDF box in the wizard? Sorry but sometimes it is easy to miss the obvious.

Hello Scott,

I do have a few questions that may help us point you in the right direction:

1) Are you running on Windows Vista? Generating PDF output in this environment is a known issue with RoboHelp 6.
2) You uninstalled and reinstalled. Was this RoboHelp or Acrobat that you did this to? If you have not done so already, can you try reinstalling the version of Acrobat you have installed?
3) What exact version of Acrobat do you have installed?
4) If all the above fails to help, lets try uninstalling the current version of Acrobat and testing with the Acrobat Elements that RoboHelp 6 comes with. Obviously, this is not a long term solution, but it will help us understand this failure a bit more.

Thank you,

Responses below ...

1) Are you running on Windows Vista?
[No ... WinXP]
Generating PDF output in this environment is a known issue with RoboHelp 6.
2) You uninstalled and reinstalled. Was this RoboHelp or Acrobat that you did this to?
[RoboHelp ... then Acrobat3D ... then re-did RoboHelp adding the Elements 7.0 ... same issues ... no pdf]

If you have not done so already, can you try reinstalling the version of Acrobat you have installed?
[Re-installed Acrobat 3D ... now it will not validate ... saying I've installed it too many times. Amazing ... not happy]

3) What exact version of Acrobat do you have installed?

[Acrobat 3D i believe it is version 7.0.9]

4) If all the above fails to help, lets try uninstalling the current version of Acrobat and testing with the Acrobat Elements that RoboHelp 6 comes with. Obviously, this is not a long term solution, but it will help us understand this failure a bit more.

[did that ... rebooted ... no pdf]

One other thought, can you confirm that Acrobat 3D is a higher version of Acrobat 7 (or 8), rather than an earlier version.

OK I will contact Adobe but I cannot post the contact address.

Whilst hopefully they will be able to resolve the ability to create the PDF file from RH, bear in mind it will be no different in appearance to what you are seeing now. All that will happen is that you will not get a Word document, creating the PDF does not pretty anything up.

Getting two TOCs is not a problem i have seen previously. Do you also get that from the test project?

Yes ... I can create the PDF from Word ... not really what I want. The doc file is kind of ugly. There are a couple of TOC's in it. I may have to turn off the TOC when creating it ... it must automatically do that.

Hope to hear from Adobe... I need to get this done ... i've got customers waiting. Who did you contact or task with this issue at Adobe?

Un-installed ... deleted reg entries ... re-booted ... re-installed ... same issue. What is next?

Sorry, missed the default bit.

The theory is that if you have Acrobat 7 or 8 installed, that will disable being able to install Elements but either 7 or 8 will do the same job. I believe Acrobat 3D is a higher version and it should also be able to be OK.

As this is a ROBOHELP 6 installation problem, hopefully Adobe will come in shortly to advise.

Post back if they do not and I will ping a contact.

One other thing, if you create the Word document, can you then create the PDF without problems? I know its not the solution you want but knowing that might help Adobe.

Yes I do see that.

I noted that in the reply prior to the last... copied below (as a reference)

Hi,

I can create WordDoc output ... just not the PDF directly. When I create a simple default RobotHelp project the same error on the PDF production occurs.

text dump from the Output tab ... ideas?

You haven't indicated whether or not you get the same problem in a simple test project. It is important that we identify whether it is an general problem or a project specific problem.
