Generate PDF crashes RoboHelp 7

Every time I try Generate PDF it crashes RoboHelp 7. I have also tried enabling the PDF generation in the Printed Documentation single source layout. Has anyone else experienced this and can you provide a solution? I am trying this with the sample help project Customer Care, as well as my own help projects. Thanks.

I have found a solution to the problem of generating a PDF file from RoboHelp 7 HTML, at least one that works for me. Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional was already installed on my PC when the Technical Communications Suite was installed. When the TCS was installed, it did not overwrite the previous RoboHelp Office and FrameMaker files, but it did overwrite the Acrobat 8 files, and that, apparently, is what caused the problem.

The problem was solved thanks to instructions that I received from Adobe tech support, so I can take no credit for this solution. The following steps fixed the PDF generation problem for me:

1. Open Adobe Acrobat 3D.
2. Select Help > Repair Acrobat Installation.
3. Wait a couple of years for the repair program to run.
4. Restart the PC.
5. Open RoboHelp 7 HTML.
6. Open a project.
7. Either click the PDF icon on the toolbar or double-click Printed Documentation and run the PDF wizard. The PDF is generated.

Thank you and have a great day.

My IT manager and I spent about 45 minutes on the phone this morning with Adobe tech support. They seem to think that there is interference from a previously installed version of Acrobat 8 Professional.

I uninstalled and reinstalled everything, but the problem was still there. The TCS readme file contains the following information. If anyone can figure out how to implement it, please let me know. I can't find anything in the TCS installation that includes this:

"PDF maker functionality is lost from Suite when Adobe FrameMaker's(Point Product) "PDF Add on" is uninstalled.
WORKAROUND: After the un-installation of "Adobe PDF Creation Add-on", run the setup of the Adobe Acrobat Elements present at the installation path of Acrobat 3D again to get PDF Maker functionality back."

I think I can safely say that's not the direct cause of the issue. I never had Acrobat 8 Professional on my machine and have been experiencing this issue. A co-worker of mine HAS Acrobat 8 Professional, and did not experience these issues. We both have (what we assumed were identical) XP machines and had the Technical Communication Suite installed yesterday. She can generate PDFs; I cannot.

I hope more is discovered about this topic, and soon.

If you haven't tried the steps above for repairing an Acrobat installation, I suggest giving that a try. It worked for me.

No word from Adobe tech support yet. I'll try again.

Fred,

Please share with the rest of us any advice you receive from Adobe tech support. Probably you're paying for it, so it should be better than anything I could say.

I continue to experience this problem. Most recently it crashed with this in the alm.log file. Any advice out there?

I can only add that I and a couple of my colleagues on the west coast are experiencing the exact same scenario described in this message thread. I have submitted the problem to Adobe technical support and am waiting for a response. Meanwhile, any advice on this subject will be welcome. Thanks.

I noticed that when I completely removed previous versions of Robo and Acrobat then reinstalled the Tech Comm Suite, this problem went away, but it seems to have come back.

I am having the same problem on a fresh install of the Technical Communication Suite. If I generate "Printed Documentation," RoboHelp HTML just shuts down in the process. It creates a Word doc, but this file is "in use" even though Word is not open (If I restart RoboHelp and repeat the process I get a message saying ".. file is in use..." If I go the !SSL! folder, open the Word.doc in question and then close Word. The temporary Word file is removed and the Word file is now unlocked. If I attempt RoboHelp again, it will try to create the PDF file, but fails again and RoboHelp shuts down.

If I open the Word file which RoboHelp created in the !SSL!/Printed_Documentation folder, I "CAN" send it to PDF and it appears to work properly. I am using Office 2003 pro and RH version 7.01.001

Are you being able to convert DOC to PDF directly from Word?

I have exactly the experience described by gofish54. So yes, I can generate PDFs from the Word doc that RoboHelp generates.
