How to pass metadata values to PDF output

Question

In my PDF output preset, I have defined title and author in the Metadata section:

I wish to also use this value in the front cover, which I assume is possible because there's a Metadata section when inserting Fields:

However, outputting it results in an empty value in the output:

Note: title gets passed to document properties, author did not:

Is there something I'm doing wrong?
