Question

In RoboHelp 2022, index entries aren't imported from FrameMaker files

I’ve imported several FrameMaker documents to my RoboHelp 2022 project, but the Index tab is empty. How do I get my FrameMaker index entries to import into RoboHelp? My index is large and I can’t recreate it manually. I upgraded from an older version of RoboHelp that had this feature, but I can’t find it in the new program or in the RoboHelp documentation. Thanks for any advice!

I don’t know if it could be a factor but I’m told it is important that the versions of RoboHelp and FrameMaker must be the same, 2022 in this case.

Just mentioning this in case it helps someone else: the feature is missing in RoboHelp 2022, as Jeff and A-Bell mentioned. It is being voted on here as a feature request: https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/RH-12334

However, I used the free version of ChatGPT to create a script that extracts the index markers from MIF files (exported from FrameMaker). The script then adds the index entries to each appropriate HTML topic. It seems to be working well so far, and I have a pretty big project (FrameMaker files total over 1,000 pages). I’m not super technical, so I’m thinking anyone can do it.

The workflow is more or less this: in FrameMaker, export to MIF (I’m going to create a separate script to run in FrameMaker to do this). In RoboHelp, update your project using the latest FrameMaker files. Run the script that extracts index markers and adds them to HTML. Generate output.

Does the script add them to the RH source XHTML or the output?

    Hello,
We also use FM-Import and “lost” the index when switching from RH Classic to RH 2020. It isn't being imported: there simply isn't an option in the import setup that enables importing the index (as there is for the TOC and glossary).

I’m not sure if that’s exactly the problem, but there’s a bug report for it that you’re welcome to add your vote for: https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/RH-12334

Thanks for the details, I upvoted it! I also included it in my latest details above, hoping for more votes.

Thanks for the ideas here. I mistakenly thought this chat was monitored by Adobe support. I’ll contact them, thank you for the suggestion!

Nope - only occasionally - mainly just user-to-user discussions here on the forums.

Maybe this one is worth speaking to Adobe Support about?

Try Adobe Support for this one. See www.grainge.org/RoboHelpGems.htm#miscellaneous Item 69.

I haven’t had a chance to test this on my system, but my suspicion is that that part of the FM to RH import process got missed in the New UI changeover - you used to be able to bring over the TOC, Index, and Glossary files from your FM book file in the Import dialogue.

Exactly what I’m hoping didn’t happen! If it’s missing from the new UI, does anyone know a workaround? Thanks for the reply.

I can’t help you with the root problem but I can maybe identify the root problem.

When you upgraded, how the index works in RoboHelp changed. See https://www.grainge.org/RoboHelp_Tour/rh2022/toc_index_glossary/index.htm

On upgrading RoboHelp, the index entries on that side should have got added to the RoboHelp topics.

Is there something more to your setup that would explain why that didn’t happen? What version were you upgrading from and how did you upgrade. It is vital that you use the Upgrade Classic Project on the File menu.

Thanks for the reply and the additional details about the index. I ended up recreating the project from scratch because it didn’t upgrade successfully, even through Classic. So, a new project, Import from FrameMaker, and my Index tab in RoboHelp is empty. It’s strange that the FrameMaker index markers aren’t imported automatically into the new RoboHelp project (and I can’t find a setting for it).
