Question

indents too large in bulleted/numbered lists, WebHelp output

Hello again,

As explained many times previously on this forum, we use RoboHelp for Word to generate both WinHelp and WebHelp output.

Usually I have troubles with WinHelp. This time, the WebHelp output is acting up. Bulleted and numbered lists look fine in compiled WinHelp, but in WebHelp output the space between the bullet or number and the text is much larger than it was defined to be. It looks bad and is pretty pervasive, so I can't ignore it.

To complicate matters further, sometimes the indents are OK in the WebHelp, and it seems to be the same Word style applied in both instances.

I saw several references to bullets and numbering problems on the forum, but none that described this exact problem in this particular product, and usually it seemed the solution was to change a Word option. This wouldn't seem to make sense in this case, given that our WinHelp came out OK, but hell, when it comes to RoboHelp I'll try anything once. I experimented with the "Don't use hanging indent as tab stop" setting as described in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/791539?tstart=0, but so far no luck.

We are running RoboHelp 8.2, with Office '07, on Windows XP. As always, any advice is very much appreciated. - Sandy

P.S. This isn't a RoboHelp issue - but anyone know why it could be that when I type "list" or "bullet" or "number" or any form thereof, into the Search field on the Forums, it says there are no entries, when obviously I found some? (I wasn't using the quotes in my search.)

Hi there

Generally speaking issues with Bullets and Numbering in WebHelp are CSS issues. You might begin your exploration by looking at Peter Grainge's pages.

As for the forums, well... Bummer that! The thing is, We are aware of it, Adobe is aware of it, and nobody that is able is really doing much about it. The software used for managing the forums is called Jive Clearspace. Oddly, Adobe is several versions behind. Seems odd to me as Adobe would love if its customers would always adopt their latest and greatest software. Yet they seem to be lagging in updating the forums software they use. Go figure.

Cheers... Rick

Hi Rick,

Thanks so much for your response.

Peter's website was the first place I looked for an answer. The only

problem from my standpoint is that Peter's solutions seem (understandably) to

be designed for RoboHelp HTML users. Judging from the forum postings, I am

one of the handful of people in the world (the other fingers may all be

located at my company) using RoboHelp for Word to generate WebHelp.

I'm gathering that since I'm not in RoboHelp HTML, what I need to do is

locate the .css file that is being used and edit it outside of RoboHelp. Is

that correct? Do I have any other options inside RoboHelp - is there some

sort of rapid conversion I could do to RoboHelp HTML? I imagine editing the

.css is much easier than whatever I might have to do in RoboHelp - I just

thought I'd ask.

Thank you! - Sandy

Hi Sandy

While Word may sport a comfortable old interface to use, almost everything you will do will be simpler to achieve in RoboHelp HTML if your output is HTML based. That's just a simple observation.

There are perhaps as many as a hundred different CSS editors out there that you might use. Nearly all of them allow you to manipulate the .CSS file. Some folks (such as my dear friend Peter Grainge) swear by certain tools. I believe he likes Top Style. Personally, I've never found one that really appeals to be. I'm looking for one that doesn't yet exist and I really wish I were a programmer so I could create it! The one I want would allow me to visually arrange things as I want to see them. Click a button and presto! Valid CSS rules would be created to format according to my visual setup. RoboHelp used to somewhat operate that way. Then it got improved.

Upgrading your project should be a simple matter of opening RoboHelp HTML, then choosing to import your RoboHelp for Word project. I believe those use a project file with an HPJ file extension.

Cheers... Rick
