Question

Is it possible to use heading values in PDF header?

Hello,

Not sure if i am missing a setting or this is just can't be done with RH.  In my PDF templates, I use the chapter name (always h1) in the top-right of my header.  Is it possible to set the header variable to use whatever the H1 text is in a topic instead of the chapter title (which is basically the topic title/<title> field)?

I have quite a few mini guides.  In my web output, the chapters are all in one topic with the on page mini-toc for each guide.  I also need to offer PDF versions of these mini-guides.  I would like the chapter (h1) title to appear at the top of each section without the need to break it into several separate topic files (duplication of work).  I was able to do this in Flare where the most recent H1 was used in the header variable every time i inserted a page break.   This allowed me to import mds, edit/rewrite, and deploy in web and PDF formats quite effortlessly.

I reached out to support to see if this is possible and they never responded so I figured I would check with the community here.

    This is RoboHelp 2020, correct?

In printed outputs in RoboHelp, Word or PDF, chapters are a collection of topics but you are referring to chapters being one topic. In 2020, chapters or books as they were known in Classic versions of RoboHelp are created from the Sections in a Book TOC.

What I think you are wanting to do if I have read your post correctly is produce a PDF that is a part of a single topic and where the header will contain the H1 for that section. To the best of my knowledge that is not possible in RoboHelp.

I don't think in many years of using RoboHelp I have seen anyone wanting that but I do see its value. I can only suggest you submit a feature request. Please follow this link to report bugs or request new features. https://tracker.adobe.com. Post the link to your bug report / feature request in this thread and others can vote for it. The more people who do so, the higher it gets prioritised.

Thank you for responding, Peter.  I submitted a request.  One of my content resourses comes in the form of markdown files in one massive readme.  What I do now is import that md, then create separate topics and copy each section into its own topic.  Its not too much extra work but i was not sure if there was a way for the appliation to parse <h1> tags to populate the header like i used to in madcap.
